About Westhuizen Estates
Tradition & Experience
Van der Westhuizen Estates is a family-owned business run by the ninth and tenth generation of livestock farmers who have vast experience of sheep and cattle ranching. However, our love for the African Bush and Savannah led us toward expanding our stock farming into the game industry. And since 1994 we have experienced the true magic of Africa by obtaining land on the banks of the unspoiled Matlabas River which runs close to the town of Thabazimbi in the Limpopo Province. A few years later we also switched from cattle farming to game farming near Barkly West in the Northern Cape province by enclosing 8000 ha of water-rich land next to the Harts River. Both these mentioned regions have exceptional mixed vegetation with sweet veld grazing and are considered to offer ideal and high quality game breeding conditions.
In 1998, we invested in endangered species like roan, sable and buffalo and for the past 18 years we have been breeding game of exceptional quality through natural selection. Initially we focused on the international hunting industry. However, since 2008, we thought it best to start breeding species for the uplifting of our already existing gene pool hence making a positive contribution to the game breeding industry of South Africa. By combining good genes with ample space and grazing, we believe that - in the long term - we are promoting healthy and well balanced trophy animals of exceptional quality and we are well-known for our Roan, Sable, Blue Wildebeest and Lechwe.
